Reliable Furnace Repair in San Antonio for Cold Snaps
It’s Cold and It Won’t Run
Why Furnaces Here Fail From Sitting
Furnace repair in San Antonio is mostly a disuse problem. Mild winters and a six month cooling season mean the heating side sits for much of the year. Then it gets asked to work on the first genuinely cold night. That’s a harder ask than running all winter, and it’s why the faults we find skew toward things that fail quietly while nobody is watching.
A flame sensor corrodes over a long idle stretch. A thermocouple drifts. An inducer motor that hasn’t turned since spring can stick on its bearings. None of that announces itself in summer. You find out on the first cold night, when the thermostat calls for heat and the house stays where it is.
So the first visit of the season is a different job from a mid-winter breakdown up north. We’re not chasing wear. A heating contractor here is looking for what went stiff, dirty or corroded while the system was switched off. There’s a short list of usual suspects. The 90-day warranty covers whatever we end up replacing.
Two Different Furnaces, Two Different Faults
What breaks depends a lot on when the house was built, and the north side has both ends of that. Shavano Park and Bulverde are nothing like each other in this respect, and they fail in almost opposite ways. It’s worth knowing which one you’ve got before you call, because it changes what we load on the truck.
Shavano Park still has a lot of pre-1956 housing, and where the original heating is still in place it tends to be the older sort. Standing pilot, thermocouple, a gas valve that’s been sitting there for decades. When that fails it fails mechanically, and the fix is usually a part you can hold in one hand.
Out in Bulverde the housing is newer and the failures are electronic rather than mechanical. Hot surface ignitor, pressure switch, inducer motor, control board. Diagnosing that means reading what the board reports, not looking for a flame that isn’t there, and it’s a different visit from start to finish.
What Usually Brings Us Out
What We Go Looking At First
The Part of the Job We Won’t Rush
Anything burning gas inside a house gets looked at properly before it gets handed back. That means the heat exchanger, the venting, the gas line into the appliance and how the burner is actually behaving. Carbon monoxide is why that part of the visit gets time rather than a glance. It’s why we’d sooner leave a furnace off than leave it questionable.
If you smell gas, this page isn’t the right call. Get out, leave the door open behind you, and call it in from the sidewalk rather than the hallway. Don’t touch a switch on the way past. The appliance side is ours afterwards, once somebody with the authority to say so has cleared the building.
How the Visit Actually Goes, Step by Step
Five steps, and the order matters because the small causes sit at the top of it. Plenty of first-of-season calls never get past step three, which is the point of working this way round.
1. Watch it try to start
Before anything comes apart we call for heat and watch the sequence. Where it stops tells you most of what you need. A furnace that lights and drops out after a few seconds is a different fault from one that never lights. Delayed ignition sounds like nothing else.
2. Flame sensor and ignition
On an older unit that means the pilot light, the thermocouple and whether the gas valve is opening. On a newer one it’s the hot surface ignitor and what the board reports. Either way it’s the first place to look after a long idle summer.
3. Airflow and the switches
A blocked furnace filter or a lazy blower motor will trip a limit switch and shut the whole thing down. It looks like a dead furnace from the hallway. The pressure switch and the inducer motor get checked here too, because a seized inducer stops the sequence before it starts.
4. The combustion side
Then the heat exchanger and the venting, properly, with the burner running. It gets time on a heating call rather than a glance. It’s also where short cycling gets explained, since a furnace shutting down early has a reason upstream of the burner.
5. What you get told
Then you hear what failed, what it takes to put right, and whether the unit is worth the money at its age. If the honest answer is that it isn’t, you’ll get that too, and you won’t be talked round.

Did You Know?
San Antonio’s electric and gas company isn’t one the city buys from. It bought the thing outright in 1942, and CPS Energy now calls itself the nation’s largest municipally owned energy utility providing gas and electric both.
