Start With What the Unit Is Doing

Every AC capacitor repair in San Antonio we do carries a 90-day warranty, and on this part that’s an easy promise to make. A capacitor either reads in spec or it doesn’t. If yours is humming without starting, or the outdoor fan is turning slowly, we’ll put a meter on it. You’ll see the number before anything gets sold.

The reason to check this part first is money. If someone has already quoted you a full system, bring the bid. A capacitance meter settles whether the capacitor is the problem. If the reading comes back healthy you’ll hear that plainly, and we’ll keep looking rather than guess at the next part.

The physics of why these parts wear out has its own write-up, so this page stays on the visit itself. What you should expect from an HVAC contractor is the fault named, with the reading behind it shown to you. You should also get a straight answer about what else on that unit is close to going. That’s the whole job.

What a Capacitor Call Looks Like Here

What makes the work different along the Fredericksburg Road corridor in Balcones Heights is what we find inside the cabinet. A unit here may have had parts swapped by whoever came last. The rating stamped on a capacitor isn’t always the rating the system was built for. A six month cooling season finds that out quickly. We read the part against the equipment, not against a label somebody else left behind.

Texas licenses this work through the TDLR. There, the class tells you what size system a contractor can work on, and the endorsement tells you what kinds of equipment. Aircules holds a Class A license with the Combined endorsement, so environmental air and commercial refrigeration both, plus EPA 608 for handling refrigerant.

Capacitors sell over the counter, so people swap them, and plenty of those swaps work fine. The ones that don’t work come back to us with the wrong microfarad rating in. Others have leads on the wrong terminals, or a disconnect box that was never pulled. Around Wonderland of the Americas the units are old enough that it’s worth a try. If you’ve had a go and you’ve still got a humming compressor, say so when you call.

A capacitor is the one repair you can stand and watch from start to finish. It’s worth doing, because it’s the quickest way to see whether your tech is guessing.

How We Test It Before We Replace It

What happens between your call and a working unit, in the order it actually happens. Also the point where we stop if the numbers are pointing somewhere else.

1. Power off at the disconnect

Before anything gets touched, the disconnect box comes out and the capacitor gets bled off. This is the step people skip at home. The part stores what it was last charged with, and it holds it after the power is gone. That’s enough to put you on the ground.

2. Read the microfarads

The meter goes on the terminals and the rating comes off the side of the can. Those two numbers either match inside tolerance or they don’t. You see both, and when they match we move on instead of selling you a part that’s doing its job.

3. Check what sits beside it

Then we work outward in the order things fail together. Contactor and relay first, since they cycle with the capacitor, and contactor pitting is the usual finding. Then the low-voltage control wiring, the 24-volt transformer, the condenser fan motor. That stops the second visit.

4. Match the replacement

The replacement has to match the rating, not the bracket. A dual-run capacitor feeds compressor and fan on separate terminals. A start capacitor does a different job again, and a single-phase motor cares which side it’s wired to. We stock the common ratings.

5. Decide on a hard-start kit

Last, we read startup draw. If the compressor is pulling hard we’ll say a hard-start kit is on the table, and what it does and doesn’t fix. Where the draw reads normal you’ll hear that we don’t think you need one. Either way it’s priced as its own line.

A German dean took a shock off a nail in a medicine bottle in October 1745. Months later researchers at Leiden built the same thing independently, and it’s the Dutch city’s name that stuck to it.
