What You’re Actually Paying For
An AC replacement in San Antonio is worth what the installation is worth, and not a penny more. The equipment on the truck is roughly what every company in town can order. What separates one job from another is the load calculation, the ductwork condition, and whether the system is properly matched. It also comes down to who still answers the phone in year three.
Whether you should replace at all is a separate question, and it’s getting its own write-up rather than a sales pitch here. So the rest of it is about the work. As an air conditioning installation crew we’d rather explain what a proper changeout involves than hand you a brochure. Where the House Sets the Whole Job
Two areas make the point better than a general explanation would. What limits a replacement isn’t usually the outdoor unit, since that part is close to a straight swap. It’s everything the unit connects to. This city runs cooling close to six months a year. Whatever you leave in place gets worked twice as hard as it would somewhere with a short summer.
Take Castle Hills, where the houses run long and low. On that footprint the constraint is the line set run and the static the ducts are already fighting. A condenser sitting further from the air handler than the last one is a real design question. Get it wrong and the system never quite reaches its rating, in the months when you need all of it.
Stone Oak is the other kind. When original 1990s equipment reaches end of life, the ductwork is the same age as the unit that just died. How a Replacement Actually Runs
Five stages, and the first two happen before anybody orders equipment. That order is the whole argument, because a system chosen before the house is measured is a guess with a warranty on it.
1. Measure the house
A load calculation, not a look at the old data plate. The system that was there might have been wrong when it went in. Copying its tonnage just repeats somebody else’s mistake for the life of the next one. System sizing comes off the house you actually have.
2. Look at what it connects to
Ductwork condition, the line set, the electrical, the drain. This is the part that gets skipped when a quote needs to look competitive. It also decides whether you get the efficiency gains you paid for. Skip it and you just get a newer badge on the side of the house.
3. Pick the actual system
Now the equipment. Whether single stage or variable speed suits the house is a real conversation, not a tier on a chart. On a two-story Stone Oak layout it lands differently than on a Castle Hills ranch. Financing is available if the timing is awkward.
4. The install itself
Old system out, new one set, line set handled properly for the refrigerant type going in, and the system evacuated before it’s charged. Shortcuts here are invisible at handover and expensive in year two. You’ll see what we did rather than hear about it.
5. Commission and record
Then it gets started up properly and the readings get written down: charge, temperature split, static. Those numbers are what anybody diagnosing this system in five years will wish existed. You get a copy of them.
What a Bad Replacement Looks Like
It looks fine. That’s the problem with it. A bad changeout cools the house the week it goes in. You have no way to tell it apart from a good one until the second summer. By then the bills say otherwise. The tells are things nobody shows you: no load calculation, an old line set reused without a thought, an unmatched condenser.
So the honest advice is to ask for the boring things, and to ask before you sign rather than after. The checklist beside this section is the whole of it, and none of those questions should be difficult for anyone to answer. Anybody doing this work properly will hand the numbers over without a fuss, and the reaction you get is itself worth having.
